New BlackBerry Smartphone Owner? Here Are Some Free Apps to Check Out
Were you one of the lucky ones to open that unexpected present and see a BlackBerry Smartphone staring back at you? If you were, you were probably filled with joy and excitement, and then as the day went on you began to think what else you could possibly need for it to function, or how you can make it a great counterpart of your everyday life. While there are endless amounts of ways to make the device your own, the hunt can be a difficult one because of just how much is available. As always, we are here to try and help make your hunt an easy and painless one.
Let's start with some free applications, because well, we all know the holiday's just passed and not everyone has money to spend on additional applications and such for their device. There are a lot more than this out there, but as a new BlackBerry owner we're just looking to help you get your feet wet in the world of BlackBerry and CrackBerry. Enjoy!
1. CrackBerry.com Launcher - This is a great free application that replicates the CrackBerry.com forums on your device with a very clean, easy to use layout. The launcher has recently been revamped to replicate the web version of the forums, and what new user wouldn't want access to potential answers to their questions at their fingertips at all times? You can download this launcher directly from your device by heading to crackberry.com/getlauncher
2. Viigo (CrackBerry Edition) - Who doesn't like to keep up with various news headlines, sports updates and stock information while on the go? While the BlackBerry can access all this information through the web, it can be a bit tedious to have to venture to each site to view the information you want to see. Viigo puts the RSS feeds for various sites all into one easy to use application. Users can customize what feeds they want on their device, and also the CrackBerry Edition will show users new blog and forum posts. For some more information, and to pick up your copy head here.
3. Pandora - Music is a big part of many people's life, and on the PC there are many options for streaming music, and Pandora has blessed us with a BlackBerry application, so you can continue that love for music on the go. The Pandora application mimmics the web version very well, allowing many of the same features to be utilized, and gives users access to their musical selection, and channels they set on the PC while on the go. Head to pandora.com from your BlackBerry or check out Pandora in BlackBerry App World to download this application today.
4. Poynt - This application allows users to search for businesses in the local area, as well as movies, view movie trailers and purchase tickets. If you are someone constantly on the go this is a must have, as it offers great GPS compatability, which allows users to quickly gain access to directions and other information while on the go. To check out more information on this application and download your copy today, hit up the CrackBerry App Store or check out Poynt in BlackBerry App World.
5. UberTwitter - For those out there who love the wonderful world of twitter, UberTwitter is a great BlackBerry Twitter Client that allows access to your timeline, @ replies as well as direct messages on the go. You can tweet, view tweets, post pictures, videos, see what your friends are doing and more all on the go with this application. Head over to http://www.ubertwitter.com/bb/download.php to download, and be sure to follow @crackberry and tweet us with any questions you may have!
For additional free BlackBerry application's that you can download OTA right from your BlackBerry Smartphone, be sure to check out our still-growing free applications list from your device.
Unfortunately, not all application's for the BlackBerry Smartphone are available in a free version, nor are the accessories that many users will end up wanting to check out for their device. A few weeks ago we ran some gift guides that detailed accessory and application suggestions for various types of BlackBerry users. Be sure to check them out again, as there is a lot of great information and ideas in there to help ensure you get the most out of your BlackBerry Smartphone.

AQucsaiJr Dec 28, 2009 at 1:55 pm
I think there are a few more that should be listed but this is a good start.
JavaDevelop Dec 28, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Why only Pandora?
Why only UberTwitter?
There are so many options in these two categories alone. The above article is a good start, though let's get some more perspectives out there for new users.
Here's a post that's 3 months old, but still relevant on must have apps (in my opinion) for a multi-media BlackBerry user. They aren't all free, but they really show the device off well.

Some other essentialk free apps I would offer for consideration:
1) Bolt Browser (www.boltbrowser.com)
2) Google Mobile App (m.google.com)
3) Vlingo (www.vlingo.com)
4) QuickPull (Steelthorn software)
5) Dictionary App (from m.reference.com)
All sites listed above should be navigable through your browser on your BlackBerry.
Happy New Year!

That is one weak list. More of a CrackBerry advertisement than anything (which is getting increasingly annoying in itself...)

BB apps are so lame... and now to make matters worse we are having these connection issues... BB sucks! I need a Droid or Nexus One... or even an iPhone!
dreedy1 Dec 28, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Then try them out...not bad phones. Don't like the Droid but iPhone isn't too bad. I'll stick with my Tour. But I agree...weak list.
webmastir Dec 28, 2009 at 2:53 pm
agreed. these past few outages have already set it in stone. android, here i come (in a few months when my contract is up)

If you like your beloved Android and iPhones so much then stop posting on CB and trade in your BB. You're wasting everyone's time.

I'm sorry, but where did I miss the part where this article was expected to list every single free application known to man? If that was promised anywhere, I apologize in advance. Does a brand new user need to know every Twitter application available, or is it OK to just list the best one for now? Do they need every free music app available, or is it OK to just list the best one for now? Is a brand new Blackberry user frantically searching for a second browser or a quicker way to pull their battery? 8 comments so far... 2 trashing Blackberries (perfectly within their right to have an opinion) and 6 trashing the "LIST". Did you wake up this morning and run out of things to complain about?
Michelle Haag Dec 28, 2009 at 4:15 pm
If I was a new BB user, this would be a great list to get me started, as well as the other articles that the post referenced.
There are a bazillion apps out there, free and paid, many that do the same or similar tasks. It would be impossible to list them all, and even more impossible to try to weed through them and pick what to install without confusing a new user even more.
Obviously the people commenting negatively about the post are not new to BB. I wish more people followed the old rule "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all", instead of the new trend of "I don't like this and I'm going to spread my negativity far and wide because my opinion is the most important thing in the world".

NightFire Dec 28, 2009 at 9:36 pm
Yes, Viigo works on OS 5.0. I've got it running on 5.0.0.405.

Great blog D2B! And for the folks looking to add to the list or to argue or otherwise discuss, that's what we got the Forums for. :)

Well said IceboxMN & phishgirl3..!!! Jesus H Christ people...drm2blv was trying to be helpful!!!
Don't let crackberry become Ur everyday typcal run-o-the-mill Torrent sites with nothing but pure Negativity! Nag Nag Naaaaaaag.
Constructive criticism...Yes! But if you don't have anything good to say and or to ADD, then SHUT THE F**K UP!".

Thanks for the appp "heads-up", as a new user I'm always looking to use my Berry better :).
However, I hate hate hate the FB for BB app because it continually fails to load, is slow, and worst of all, screws up my contacts list instead of adding to it. Everything else I've gotten is pretty cool.
montage Dec 29, 2009 at 4:22 am
LOL @ the bid for mobile app store... hardly the way an auction is conducted.
martinl1989 Dec 29, 2009 at 6:24 am
The best Twitter application I've came across, and the most user friendly is Tweetgenius, though not free it was well worth the $7.99!
Lincs1 Dec 29, 2009 at 8:33 am
I like the list. When you're a new BB owner it's good to start off with a few basic apps and then when you understand the workings and capabilities of how apps and the device work a bit more then you can explore further apps. I assume that is what this review was for?
As a UK based BB owner I've found it a constant in depth struggle to wade through all the apps designed for overseas use trying to find decent ones that will work over here. Would it be possible to have a future blog/feature/whatever that shows a list of apps that work on our carriers? I know most do but apps like those featured in this review are great except for some are not meant for the UK, Pandora, Viigo and poynt are no good for us so a list to cover for the UK market would be great and save new UK owners alot of time when searching for their apps, it'll also save them wasting time downloading these apps that are almost unuseable for them.

Can noone on here be satisfied with anything?
A bunch of whiners that would be p1ss1ng and moaning if they were hung with a new rope!!!!
redyfoxx Dec 29, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I love all the suggested apps, stop moaning. If you dont like the list, create your own.

All in all the CrackBerry List of 5 must have apps is a great starting point. All the apps mentioned apply to just about every BB user there is. I've had my Curve for about 6 months and out of all the BlackBerry websites out there, and there are several as we all know, CrackBerry is the most knowledge packed one I have found and a trusted resource so if it is recommended by CrackBerry then you can be assured that the advice is good and proven by professionals who live and breathe BlackBerry!!
Bushman2 Feb 2, 2010 at 11:14 pm
If you feed them, they will stick around.
Getting my first BB, Tour 9630, and as a newb any list of free apps is cool. Thanks for posting...
