I wore out the Typo keyboard for iPhone in less than 72 hours

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you've been seeing some of my updates as I put the BlackBerry-esque Typo keyboard for the iPhone to the test. Now it's time for a bigger update to the in-depth Typo review I posted previously.

In that review I noted that the build quality felt a little on the cheap side and that durability was something I had concerns about. It didn't take long for me to run into an issue. Less than 72 hours of use later (and that was really at 50% use as I've been dual-wheeling the Typo and my P'9982 all week), the E button quit working reliably on the Typo. You can see the evidence in the Instagram video below. Sometimes it still works, but more often than not it doesn't register a click.

Laurence Hallier, the founder of Typo, saw the Instagram post and was quick to follow up with me via email, letting me know that they had not to date experienced that with any of their units, and that he would send me a new one and a return envelope so I could send back my busted unit for them to examine.

From there, I followed up with some additional details on the way the E key was behaving, to which Laurence diagnosed the likely culprit as a broken click dome or (or it simply quit making contact).

Laurence also let us know they've been working on improvements to make the keyboard noise quieter. They just received another batch of 1,000 pre-production units which feature new silicon that makes for a quieter typing experience. Personally I don't mind a "clacky" keyboard, but Laurence says he's really liking the new units, so he's eager to get my feedback on them. Laurence also reiterated that he "got into this to build the best and fastest keyboard experience for iPhone and we continue to make improvements and adjustments to make sure our production units are perfect."

As for why I'm posting about an iPhone keyboard on a BlackBerry website? That's easy. Because it absolutely looks like a BlackBerry-made product. I'll circle back with another update once I log some finger mileage on the new Typo.

This was major news and now that the cat is out of the bag, how will the media pick up on Kevin's evaluation of TYPO,Once a person told me that it doesn't matter what people say about you ,it matters that they are talking about you.

amirnabilkamelsaad

So what, I had the T button on my first Q10 that went bad and the forums are full or hardware defects for buttons on the Q10 such as other letters or even the shift keys. By The Way, I have Q10SQN100-1/10.2.1.1925, it all boils down to return policy and refund.

An iPhone breaks if someone on the other end of a call speaks too harshly. The build quality is pitiful, and yet for some reason people imagine they're premium phones.

GrahamPink

Apple's advertising is cool, so if the commercials are cool, the product must be as well.

ytayj

This is unfortunately the way 99% of consumers think.

chiamattt

The only unfortunate thing is that BB commercials aren't cool. I like the BB experience, so I will probably stay BB forever. People who will always like the iphone experience will probably always stay iphone. That's fine. But if BB could get the vast number of people who don't care, why wouldn't they choose the company that has the coolest advertising and app selection?

Dannynutdude

Actually, the build quality is amazing on the iPhone, it's the best in the market right now . I banged the power of my power button on my Z10 super hard on the corner of a desk and there's marks around the button to prove it. Occasionally the button stops working for a minute which prevents me from turning off the device. The power button is so thin compare to the iPhone's + it's made of some sort of magnesium alloy which is softer than aluminum if I'm correct

I will bet Laurence didn't wake up one day thinking, I hope Kevin reviews my keyboard and broadcasts his findings. Easy to blame the defect on it being pre-production, but in true Mobile Nations fashion, the detailed review is sound. Nice job Kevin. No one does keyboards like BlackBerry. That's why I have a Q10

@sirjis look closely and you will see BlackBerry imbeded in the red one. It was when blackberry wanted to partner with google. Android doesn't need my publicity anyway, they are already huge

james pisano

I imagine some economic entities benefit from any publicity, that is, no publicity is bad publicity for them. However, it seems others might be hurt by bad publicity. There is also a difference in the subject of the bad publicity.

For instance, if I am Miley Cyprus or whoever, the publicity I've been getting, despite being derogatory, probably helps me raise awareness for my brand, which has to do with my singing; my core business. Granted, I would also be an entertainer, but people go to shows to listen as much as to watch and will go to see a "train wreck" just as they would go to see a perfect show.

On the other hand, if I am a restaurant and I get detogatory publicity about health department violations, that would likely hurt my business.

My point is, I cannot see how Typo having bad publicity about their keyboard quality, is good for their business, in part because the keyboard quality IS their entire business, and maybe also in part because they are a start up company.

Via CB10 & Z10 or Q10

Norrington :"You've got to be the worst pirate I've ever heard of. "

Sparrow: "But you have heard of me"

ronniell

@james pisano to start off, there are a whole lot of people that moved from blackberry to iPhone. Many of them hate typing on the iPhone but that hasn't made them switch back to bb. Now, here is someone offering something almost equal to having your blackberry but with all the apps and goodies you want from ios. These bad comments don't have enough weight to warrant someone not to purchase it. One key not working could be an individual product fault. So what Kevin is purporting here is quite nothing of a big deal here and more publicity for typos here.

BB30000

Are you questioning why Kevin uses a BlackBerry? Yikes. Lol. Obviously working for Crackberry will make you use a Blackberry product, but perhaps you should reverse that question....If he did not work for Crackberry, would he have ever owned a Gold Iphone?

Via The BlackBerry Z10 Experience.

ronniell

@bb30000 you know what's funny, even in that piece he wrote about the gold blackberry he saw at the CES he belittles the product by saying at that price with OS7, he would be stupid to buy it. He should know better by now in the sense that the older models still outsell the BB10's, so why throw most dust on it. To me I think he likes apple products but crackberry just keeps him on bb10

BB30000

First off, the Gold BB7 phone was not at CES, rather was at the Aria Crystal Shops Porsche Design Store. Also $20,000 was the reason not to purchase the phone, not sure what you read.

Via The BlackBerry Z10 Experience.

MC_A_DOT

Plazmic Flame

I do miss the keyboard and I've been waiting since the Bold 9900 to come back to BlackBerry but the Q10 missed the mark, for me. Unfortunately, there was no way I was going to go to a smaller screen. Hopefully the next QWERTY device from BlackBerry has a bigger (taller) screen and I'll be first in line for that device; apps be damned.

Observation Junkie

Maybe this is an opportunity for BlackBerry to explore a keyboard option with a larger screen?

Posted via CB10 from my Z10.

Plazmic Flame

Hopefully. I was saying they needed to do this before BB10 came out but what's always ironic is remembering that group of Silicon Valley people that wanted to save BlackBerry but they shunned the idea of a 3.5 inch TALL screen QWERTY..... and they are where they are now...

I really hope Mr. Chen see's the light. Clearly with the iPhone and it's 4.0 inch screen, the typo keyboard sits on it just well. It isn't "top heavy" as naysayers always like to say and even if it was built as apart of the device, it would be bottom heavy as BlackBerry always does the balance right. I can talk about this for days....

BlackBerry, next QWERTY, do it right. 4-inch, TALL, screen with the iconic keyboard, great battery life: I'll be first in line.

JRF_1986

That is a phone I would buy, say a Q10's keyboard on a Z10? Maybe even something around the size of the Z30?

Posted via CB10 on my Z10

Plazmic Flame

The Z10 with a keyboard would be nice. Maybe bring the screen down to 4.0 inches from 4.2 inches, but still keep it wide and tall. A Z30 with a keyboard would possibly be too unwieldly just because of the 5 inch screen.

bpmg4u

I have to tell you that, as much as I thought I'd never be able to live without my hard keyboard on the Torch (9800/10), when it came time to upgrade, the Q10 left me as cold as the Polar Vortex of 2014. I was with you on the "X-nay the small screen-eh."

So, a shiny new Z30 came home from the store with me and - solely IMHO - the hard keyboard can go suck it.
The Z30 virtual keys are freakin' HUGE for my "non-skinny" fingers and I can punch out lines and eMails a LOT faster than I ever could on the clickety-clack keys. PLUS, the Z30's screen is amazing!

I didn't see the apps issue as a concern - and still don't - and the Z30 and its keyboard keeps rocking it out for me day-by-day.

The ONLY thing I'm baffled by & ticked off about is the regressive development of various BB10 features & programs (not being able to shut the device "down" by timer and eMail setup limitations to name just two).

Maybe that's a possible alternative for you ... ? Give it shot; you may end up liking it as much as Iove mine.

Just My 2 cents from our penny-less country.
Cheers!

Dwaynie Boy

+1, bold 9900 was my last keyboard BB, I wanted a bigger screen but concerned about using a full touch screen, Q or Z? read reviews on how typing was actually easier on the Z so I made the plunge and haven't looked back while i type this on my Z10, now I want the Z30 =:(

Posted via CB10

Gave it to my sister a year ago and she loves it. She's dropped it many many times and it is her daily device. Says the KB is working fine and never an issue. Right, so you show up to the largest electronics show in the world and give out a defective device that can't last 72 hours. In what universe would someone do this, particularly when first impressions are CRITICAL to financial success. Doesn't matter how he spins it, you can't downplay talking and sporting anything other than BlackBerry if your the leader of this site. I can only see this this getting worse if he keeps toying around with other operating systems. Kind of like Alicia texting from and Apple etc.... Yeah, Kevin likes having an open relationship. He will go home with whoever catches his eye. BlackBerry didn't make a commitment to him either. No big shocker there. Manwhore away, Kevin! It's not like anyone on the site that you created for your love of BlackBerry will care or take notice that you fool around and swing every which way.

I used my Z10 to create this CrackBerry madness!

nerdydaddyo

That was sarcastic humor, by the way. Meant for laughs.

I can't get over how horrible it is that the on screen keyboard is still visible while you're typing on the Typo keyboard.

More people would complain if Apple weren't so infallible.

I wonder how the Typo founder feels about Kevin saying that Typo ripped off BlackBerry? I agree with Kevin.

I also think it's cool that Kevin can have lunch with BlackBerry's John Chen and then still get a Typo and be in contact with its creator. True Canadian, being so damn nice to everyone haha

In all fairness it is a new product and like any new product it will have flaws, no company is perfect. That being said however, it still looks exactly like a BlackBerry keyboard and if you want a keyboard phone get the best and we all know who that is...BlackBerry forever. wooo

Why is this on Crackberry? Kevin should post on iMore. Does he want BlackBerry users to switch to iPhone?

Omg.. Lol ! This is hysterical.. The name of the company really fits. Can't type the character "e". Wow.. typo keyboard..

I don't see why BlackBerry doesn't make a longer mobile with keyboard on the bottom. Even with that Typo board attached, the profile is not too huge.

DementedDevil

I don't know who at Typo ok'ed having Kevin as a tester but it was clearly a high risk strategy. If it gets the thumbs up then that is high praise indeed.

How the company deals with problems will also shine in a positive manner for those who might be sitting on the fence.
So far the firm looks very eager in this regard so I suspect any quality issues could be easily (and quickly) dealt with.

Hopefully they will fall foul of patent infringement.

In any case I have a question for CrackBerry. If one of these cases was available for the Z10/Z30 (obviously made by BBRY) would anybody consider buying one?

Just a hypothetical question.

If you are wondering, I would not: the Z10 virtual keyboard is tastic!

If BB made one for z10 and it was in good slim form factor, I would buy one. But I am prolific with the osk and would miss the flick words. When I need a keyboard, which is hardly ever, I pair my ps3 keypad and it does the trick, with a mouse option....

BlackBerry is currently working on a z10 screen size qwerty device as the next flagship phone so the need for this type of keyboard accessories!

Really, Q10 for god sake. The only device with an awesome keyboard. Though, if quality is matched, could be a potential hit for iOS owners to be honest. But i think BlackBerry doesn't let it hit the market for very long :).

Well, my only response to this article is that I certainly hope that CB staff also post articles on iMore that are about BlackBerry.

rjawdarian

Very nice now ur spreading negative news about an excellent product which helps gives an option to have a keypad on an iphone, and about a button that stopped working.

Let me tell you this The first q10 I bought always kept restarting and it bricked and I had it replaced cause it was faulty. Does that make the q10 a bad product. Absolutely not. It was defective and got it replaced that's all.

Since when does cb write negative posts. Typo is an excellent product and I reccomend it to all iphone users to buy it, if you want a keypad. Please keep it clean Kevin. we don't need to write a negative article on a product to boost BlackBerry. BlackBerry has a good image in the market world for a long time. what the future will bring I don't know but this article was really unnecessary.

Sorry, I'm tired of getting ripped off by the consumer product industry. I spent 1000 dollars on a Sony DSLR that failed a few weeks after the warranty expired. I work damed hard for my money and expect reasonable reliability. I appreciate others who honestly review products and call out the bad ones. Its a personal favor to me. Good quality products like BlackBerry are good for the consumer, good for the community and good for the environment.

Posted via CB10

El Platanero

Not that I'm defending the keyboard by any means but I used to sport a 9930 that the keyboard did the same thing except mine was the space bar that would stutter.

My point is that we shouldn't be judging it based on one test. I think the keyboard is a waist of money but none the less I'm still curious to see how it fairs after Kevin second test.

Just wondering if Kevin gets some sort of kick back on every sale made from the website where people tell them "Kevin Sent me" as stated at the end of the video "Visit Typo and just tell them Kevin sent me", sounds as close to an endorsement as you can get.. shameful, shameful being on a CB site, appears as if brand loyalty went south the same time ownership did?

I agree that the keyboard is a blatant rip off of BlackBerry's iconic design. I use a Q5 and a Z10. I love them both but do find that for days of intensive texting the Q5 is my preferred choice. I'm sure Q10 users will agree. I do not have any appreciation for the iPhone and am a dyed-the-wool BlackBerry user, especially with BB10. Now as to the "idea" behind the add on keyboard case Typo has developed, I kind of like it......please note I said I Iiked the "idea", not the product. It makes me wonder why BlackBerry hadn't developed such a device for their Z10, Z30 and soon to be launched Jakarta device which won't have a keboard. Now I know that such an add on device may stunt sales of BlackBerry's Q5 and Q10, but I don't think so given that their users are pretty much hard core QWERTY users anyway. If BlackBerry had launched such a case for it's keyboard-less devices I think it would have been a hit as it offers more options to BlackBerry users. For the time being, stay the course and sue the heck out of Typo and Seacrest for their blatant ripoff of the BlackBerry keyboard. BlackBerry Rules!

To me this was a missed opportunity by BlackBerry because they half assed the Q10. The Q10 should have had a bigger screen to what the iCrap looks like with the typo except with the width of the Q10 from the get go. I seriously hope BlackBerry rethinks this for their next iteration of the Q10.

d3x84

My z10 fell like 20 times out of my pocket and it has just 1 lite scratch under the BlackBerry logo and thats it...the iphone build quality is good but it will brake fast because of the materials they use. its a Design object because Apple is all about Design. Its not about durabilty. It is designed to look and feel good in the hand. The build quality on most BlackBerry is durable. Its like Lenovo says "for those who do" and thats all about lenovo in just 1 sentence. BlackBerry has to find something similar.
