New video highlights all the great features of BBM

Ever since BlackBerry announced a new partnership with Indonesia-based Emtek to help expand the consumer BBM business, marketing for BBM has been rolling out pretty rapidly. Everything from new sticker announcements to contests to new features have been highlighted more so than perhaps ever before and now, a new video has been published by BBM to showcase all that BBM offers.

As expected, a lot of what is shown off in the new video is regional and not available to everyone using the platform but it's still great to see such a push for BBM. Check out the new video and let us know what you think of it in the comments!

Ever since BlackBerry announced their plans to end all internal hardware development and outsource that function to partners, there has been a lot of focus on the rumored last 'in-house' BlackBerry due to some mixed messages surrounding the possibility of its release. A new interview from Bloomberg with John Chen clears the air on the matter while also discussing something else that has been on the minds of many, the implications of Donald Trump's election on the tech sector.

How to reload the OS on your BlackBerry Priv, DTEK50 or DTEK60

This guide was updated on November 9, 2016 to reflect new changes within the reloading process and to add details for the DTEK50 and DTEK60.

With the autoloaders for all BlackBerry smartphones powered by Android, there's sure to be folks needing to know how the whole process works, and we're glad to help with that. Take a look at our full rundown of how to reinstall the OS on your BlackBerry Priv, DTEK50 or DTEK60. It's all relatively easy, but do keep in mind you will need to have a Windows or Mac computer to complete the process plus, reinstalling the OS will indeed erase all local data.

BlackBerry DTEK60 now available from Selfridges and Carphone Warehouse

While the list of retailers selling the DTEK60 in the UK is already pretty great, two new retailers have now been added to the mix. Selfridges and Carphone Warehouse are both now offering the DTEK60 in the UK SIM free.


At Selfridges, those interested in grabbing a DTEK60 will be expected to lay down £475.00 with £5.00 standard delivery, £8.00 nominated day delivery or £10.00 timed delivery. Of course, you also have the Click & Collect option where you pick up the device in store.

Carphone Warehouse

If Carphone Warehouse is more your jam, they also have the DTEK60 available for £475.00 and if you order before 8PM, you're eligible for free for next day delivery. Additionally, you can pick the device up in store but you should check stock levels on their site before heading out.

BlackBerry Priv, DTEK50 and DTEK60 November updates now available

Keeping in line with their monthly update schedule, BlackBerry has now begun the roll out of the November update patch for Priv, DTEK50 and DTEK60. Just as with the earlier beta release, this update could come in as a small update for you or as a rather large one.

BlackBerry and Optiemus announce the DTEK50 and DTEK60 in India

BlackBerry customers in India looking to get their hands on either the DTEK50 or DTEK60 will be pleased to know BlackBerry has partnered with Optiemus to bring both devices to market. Announced by Alex Thurber at an event in India, the mid-range DTEK50 will be available for Rs. 21,990 while the higher-end DTEK60 will be available for Rs. 46,990.

"India is a very important market for BlackBerry," explained Alex Thurber, BlackBerry's Senior Vice President of Global Device Sales, during the official launch event in New Delhi on Monday. "[Our] partnership with Optiemus Infracom strengthens our network of key partners in India, and enables us to deliver our secure BlackBerry Android experience to more customers. As we implement a new strategic direction in our Mobility Solutions business, we will continue to leverage third parties to distribute and market BlackBerry handsets."

Verizon now officially rolling out Android Marshmallow to Priv owners

While we had an indication it would be coming soon earlier, there was no official documentation to go along with it from Verizon. Now, though, that has changed and Verizon has finally updated their Priv software update page to officially announce the Android Marshmallow update for Priv owners.

Software Version: AAH376

Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update for your BlackBerry Priv. Android™ 6.0 Marshmallow improves your mobile experience with new battery-smart features and enhanced app permissions that give you even more control.

Wi-Fi Calling - You can make and receive calls over a Wi-Fi network if cellular service isn't available, helping conserve your data:

  • It's included at no additional charge with your existing plan and device
  • Use your own phone number to make and receive calls
  • Wi-Fi calls to US numbers are free, even while traveling outside the US
  • You can activate Wi-Fi Calling directly on your device. Go to Settings > Advanced Calling > Activate Advanced Calling

Once Advanced Calling is active, you can turn on HD Voice and Wi-Fi Calling from the same settings.

Now on Tap - Instantly pull up relevant information cards.

  • Now on Tap anticipates what you need in the moment. With a simple tap, you can get cards with useful information and apps that feed your need to know. For example, if you open up the Calendar app and see an appointment to meet at a museum, just press and hold the home button to view information about the museum. Once you done, you'll go back to the Calendar app.

Runtime Permissions

  • A new feature to help protect your privacy. Certain apps will now request your permission to use features on the phone.

Google Settings

  • Changes to Google Services and Apps are now done in the Settings Menu. The Google Settings app has been removed from the applications tray.

BlackBerry Keyboard - The improved keyboard prediction engine provides a better experience by picking out commonly used words.

  • Words with numbers now can be learned, like 1-800-FLOWERS
  • Easier to write emails with name suggestions from the contact app
  • Enter words on the virtual or physical keyboard by swiping across keys

Home screen launcher

  • You can now sort apps with separation between work and personal application.

Floating phone indicator

  • The floating phone indicator appears when a call is active now shows mute state.

SIM Contacts

  • Add, update, and delete contacts to the SIM card


  • Provides a user with an improved method of unlinking contacts and information from multiple sources.

Tasks and Notes

  • Rich text editing is now added in both Tasks and Notes applications.

Camera - Take your photography to the next level with enter an advanced controls and manual capture settings such as:

  • Shutter speed
  • ISO
  • EV Compensation
  • White Balance
  • You can record video at 24 FPS in 4K, Full HD , or HD.

DTEK improvements - You can modify permissions on a system or per app level from within the DTEK app.

  • DTEK will notify you if the system detects a security change.

If you've been waiting for the update to arrive, go ahead and check your device for updates. Keep in mind, though, Verizon might slowly be rolling it out to users rather than just letting everyone have it all at once, so if you're not seeing it yet, just give it a bit longer. BlackBerry Priv November beta update now available

While we wait and see if the Verizon Marshmallow update eventually appears for all, BlackBerry has gone ahead and released their November beta update for all Priv owners except those on Verizon. This time around, the update is fairly small coming in at around 98MB (some folks may see a larger update) but once updated, you'll have the latest security patch ahead of everyone else. For those keeping track, this update is noted to be firmware AAH505.

If you're a Priv owner on Verizon and have been waiting for Android Marshmallow, your wait may finally be coming to an end. Verizon may soon finally be rolling out Android Marshmallow to Priv owners. Although it doesn't seem widespread as of yet, at least one member in the CrackBerry Forums has now reported receiving the Android Marshmallow update on their Verizon BlackBerry Priv, while others are seeing 'Unable to connect' when checking for updates.

Get BBM and you could get into an exclusive party in Johannesburg

If you live in South Africa and are looking to have some fun, BBM has now kicked off a new campaign where you could get in on 'the most exclusive party of the year' in Johannesburg, just by using BBM.

The event itself will take place on December 1st in Johannesburg, South Africa, and DJ's Black Coffee and Black Motion will be there spinning along with Shizma PH and Twins on Decks. Entering is easy as well.

Here's how:

  • Download the BBM app on Android or iOS
  • Go to channels, search for 'BBM Get In' and join
  • Click on 'Apply now' and submit your details
  • Wait and see if you get in

Aside from this being pretty awesome, it's a pretty good sign of how things are going to be marketed with BBM going forward. Along with this, BBM also launched a brand new BBM connected game in Indonesia with BBM sticker tie-ins and more.

BlackBerry and Ford sign agreement for expanded use of BlackBerry's QNX and security software

BlackBerry and the Ford Motor Company have a pretty well laid out history of working together and today, that relationship has been extended. BlackBerry has now announced that a new agreement with Ford Motor Company has been signed for the expanded use of BlackBerry's QNX and security software. Although the terms of the deal are confidential, BlackBerry notes it signifies an acceleration in BlackBerry's pivot from hardware to software in support of the automaker's goal of providing connected vehicles and mobility to its customers.

ShopBlackBerry has extended their deals on Priv and Passport

If you still haven't taken advantage of the ShopBlackBerry offers on Priv and Passport, BlackBerry has now added some more time to the clock. Whether you are looking for a new BlackBerry 10 or Android smartphone, you won't want to miss out on this deal. You can pick up a Passport for as little as $249 USD (or $299 USD for the Silver Edition) and the Priv is available for $425 USD. As this is a extension of the original sale, BlackBerry notes that quantities are limited and vary by region.

BlackBerry fact checks Bloomberg's coverage of Apple hiring QNX talent

If you're up on your Apple rumors then you'll know that Apple reportedly has employees in Canada building a car operating system. More specifically, those employees are based in Kanata, not far from BlackBerry's QNX offices. A recent article on Bloomberg highlighted how 'Apple targeted QNX employees' but according to BlackBerry COO Marty Beard, some incorrect statements were made in the article. In a new post on the Inside BlackBerry Blog, Beard aimed to clear up some of the statements.
