BlackBerry's AtHoc receives the first FedRAMP Authorization for Crisis Communication Software

BlackBerry has now announced that its crisis communication software, BlackBerry AtHoc, has received Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) Authorization after passing the rigorous federal security and risk management review process required to offer a cloud service to the US Federal government. Speaking on the achievement, John Chen, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BlackBerry noted:

Being the first to receive FedRAMP authorization for our crisis communication solution showcases our commitment to serving and growing in the government sector, and is one more reason why the U.S. Federal Government trusts BlackBerry for its comprehensive approach to security.

As noted in the press release, BlackBerry AtHoc currently protects more than 70 percent of U.S. Federal Government employees using on-premises software and cloud services including employees of the FAA, Department of Treasury, and the Department of Energy and more.

BlackBerry Receives the First FedRAMP Authorization for Crisis Communication Software

Mar 21, 2017 - WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(March 21, 2017) - BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSX:BB), today announced its crisis communication software-as-a-service, BlackBerry AtHoc, has received Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) Authorization. This authorization certifies the BlackBerry AtHoc cloud service has passed the rigorous federal security and risk management review process required to offer a cloud service to the US Federal government. The sponsoring agency for the authorization was the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

BlackBerry AtHoc currently protects more than 70 percent of U.S. Federal Government employees using on-premises software and cloud services. Customers with full cloud deployments, such as the FAA, Department of Treasury, and the Department of Energy benefit from the security this authorization ensures and from reduced total cost of ownership by managing their entire service on the cloud. Customers with on-premises deployments can benefit as well by using FedRAMP authorized BlackBerry cloud communication services with enhanced security and monitoring capabilities.

The FedRAMP authorized BlackBerry AtHoc cloud service includes AtHoc Alert and AtHoc Connect, among other capabilities. These offerings enable agencies to securely share information critical to safety during a crisis with their people and across agencies. AtHoc Alert enables secure multi-channel, bi-directional mass notification using almost any type of device, including via secure mobile apps, telephony and texting as well as integrating with other mass notification channels such as loud speakers, two-way radios, and digital displays. AtHoc Connect enables agencies to communicate with each other during crises, addressing some of the more critical deficiencies in crisis management and answering interoperability requirements set out by the DHS Interoperable Communications Act H.R. 615. Federal agencies including the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, among many others, all depend on these BlackBerry AtHoc services to help them protect personnel around the world.

State-of-the-art continuous monitoring and incident response capabilities, complying with FedRAMP standards, will be provided by the newly formed U.S. based BlackBerry Cyber Security Operations Center (CSOC). The CSOC is led by former US Coast Guard CIO and Cyber Commander, RADM (ret) Bob Day who is now the VP of BlackBerry's Cyber Security Operation Services. Under his leadership, the CSOC will also provide support for future BlackBerry products that are slated for FedRAMP authorization process.

BlackBerry launches new partner program for embedded software delivery

To help expand BlackBerry's reach in the embedded technologies world and reduce product time to market, BlackBerry has now announced a partner program that will help 'build a worldwide network of experts trained on BlackBerry QNX and Certicom technologies'.

Through the Value-Added Integrator (VAI) program, partners will provide support for the wide array of BlackBerry technology and services including BlackBerry's QNX Neutrino Realtime OS, QNX OS for Safety, QNX OS for Medical, Certicom Toolkits, Certicom Managed Public Key Infrastructure and Certicom Asset Management System and more covering applications for automotive systems, medical surgical robots, smart grids, train control systems and industrial automation.

BlackBerry investigating device performance issues with BlackBerry 10.3.3 update

BlackBerry 10.3.3 has been rolling out to users all over the world since the end of November, and for the most part, the update has gone fine for those who have received it. That's not to say there haven't been some issues among those who updated, though, as the CrackBerry Forums have been busy with folks looking for some help with correcting some issues that have popped up. For their part, BlackBerry has now acknowledged some of the more prominent concerns that have been raised.

Although we've yet to hear from any carriers opening up pre-orders for the BlackBerry KEYone, several third-party retailers have already begun. The latest added to the mix is Media Markt which now has the BlackBerry KEYone listed for €599.00 through their online portal.

BBM continues to grow and expand its offerings and services in multiple regions

Aside from the latest design refresh to the app, there has been plenty of additional services and content being added to BBM as well. The BBM blog has highlighted three separate news announcements of new integrations coming to BBM for multiple regions including South Africa and the Middle East.

BlackBerry introduces new Privacy Shade app for Android

Along with the bevy of app updates to the BlackBerry Hub+ Suite, BlackBerry has now also introduced a new Android app called Privacy Shade. It's an interesting little app that allows you to selectively choose to obscure anything that is displayed on your screen so that others can't look at it.

BlackBerry Hub+ Services for Android update now available

The rest of the apps are now rolling out as well such as Hub, Calendar, Launcher, Password Keeper, Contact, Notes, Tasks and even DTEK. Additionally, the previously announced BBM improvements are now in full swing.

A little bit of an update to BlackBerry Hub+ Services is now rolling out through the Google Play Store. I say a little bit of an update because unfortunately, the changelog at this point simply highlights bug fixes as the only changes that have been made in this release.

BB Merah Putih officially announces the BlackBerry Aurora for the Indonesian market

As expected, based on earlier information, BB Merah Putih has now officially announced the BlackBerry Aurora for the Indonesian market, giving it the honor of being the first BlackBerry smartphone released by BB Merah Putih under its new brand licensing agreement signed with BlackBerry Limited in September 2016.

BlackBerry Aurora to officially launch in Indonesia March 9

Although the device has been up for pre-order across several Indonesian retailers for a few days now, BB Merah Putih has yet to officially announced the BlackBerry Aurora. That will change on March 9, though, as noted by several Indonesian outlets including CNN Indonesia and MetroTVNews who have now had a chance to go hands-on with device ahead of official launch.
