CrackBerry Podcast - Up & UP

We're back from NYC and wanted to touch base with everyone on what we've been up to as we close out the month of March. Good ole Pootermobile is at it again, this time dropping some cool new KEYone typography and the BlackBerry security shield in his latest wallpaper.

If you're digging the wallpaper, or change your wallpaper regularly, I get it. Here's something new for your home screen to get you in new device spirit!

This prompted me to ask if Marco could create a special version just for us here on CB.

With the image reworked and a sweet orange shield, it feels right at home here on CrackBerry. I even mocked it up on the BlackBerry KEYone for sheer drool factor. You're welcome.

Shout out to Pootermobile for keeping our device screens fresh. Download links can be found below for each color variant.

If you look closely, however, you'll see ample signs of the quiet innovations in software that users like you and I will get to enjoy.

CrackBerry Kevin brought in the BlackBerry KEYone heat to Miami last Friday, and it was a blast! We held the meetup at The Anderson. Great ambiance, artfully crafted cocktails, and the venue packed with BlackBerry fans from all over Florida. Early in the evening, the energy was high and everyone in good spirits. As I worked the floor taking in everyone's perspectives it was incredible to see how diverse the meetup group was, so many prosumers from different walks of life; doctors, realtors, project managers, it was an eclectic group, and we were thrilled to have them all as our guests.

BBM for Android update brings fixes, refinements and spam blocking

Fresh out of beta testing BBM is rolling out a new update to our favorite messenger that brings some much needed fixed and refinements. Following up on commitments made earlier in the month, spam blocking has been added to help better the user experience.

BlackBerry takes aim at securing the Enterprise of Things

BlackBerry is reaffirming the software focus and starting to more broadly share the 'BlackBerry Secure' branding on social media. In a new video on YouTube, BlackBerry highlights some of the critical endpoints they cover with software security. There have been some videos that address pieces of this strategic pivot, but this latest video really puts it all together. It's also very timely considering the new licensing deals they've struck and the impending launch of The Merc later this month in Barcelona.

BBM working on remedy for spam invites

BBM working on remedy for spam invites

Have you been getting random BBM invites lately? On social media, here in the forums and abroad, many users of BBM are reporting an increased amount of 'spam' BBM invites. If you're being affected by this, the good news is BBM is working on a fix. Reaching out with some of their users on Twitter, BBM has acknowledged the concerns and is working on a way to tag and bag these spammers and better the user experience for BBM consumers. With BlackBerry expanding their secure-communications platform BBM Enterprise with SDKs and a subscription model, it's nice to see the consumer side of BBM getting attention as well.

Spam invites are really hard to ignore. You can currently block the invites and future requests, but there's not yet a system to actually flag these spammers as such. As part of the monetization strategy for BBM, the messenger does have 'Sponsored Invites' to download games and apps, but the unsolicited requests of strangers into our favorite private-mobile social network is a big detractor on the user experience. You can pay to remove ads and sponsored invites from BBM, but there's no remedy for spam.

I've actually accepted some of these invites myself to see what they could want and almost all of them are Indonesian, guiding me to Android/BlackBerry websites and services that are not legit. Luckily, BBM is onto this and working to mitigate any further spam in an upcoming update. The version of BBM currently in beta has the ability to 'Block' and then 'Mark as Spam,' much like you would an undesired email. This and other improvements to follow in future releases.

These new details give more weight to the camera sensors that may be implemented; namely, the Sony IMX378 rear camera. This is the same camera sensor implemented in other popular smartphones like the Google Pixel and Pixel XL.
