Timeline Beta
When it comes to apps on the BlackBerry Q10, there is a huge selection available in BlackBerry World. For those times when you can't quite find what you need however, sideloading an Android app may be the way to go.
Continue Reading →If you're not a fan of the process to sideload Android apps to your BlackBerry from a Windows PC or Mac, there is an alternative way that is a bit easier to manage.
A simple Google Chrome extension can have you sideloading apps galore in just a few minutes.
This method is really the easiest we've found and, aside from some time setting it up, loading up apps takes just a minute or two.

Continue Reading →Are the opportunities and challenges for BlackBerry any different in a Galaxy S4 world? We don't think so. Samsung improved upon their S3, but didn't change the user experience for the end user in the same sort of way BlackBerry 10 has.

Technically these *are* BlackBerry apps when you install them, since the Android .apk files have been converted to .bar files, but the apps are essentially all Android and run within the Android App Player environment on BlackBerry 10.
Right now the Android App Player on BB10 is running Gingerbread (Android v2.3), but support for Jelly Bean (v4.2) has been announced and is coming soon, which should see a further boost in the performance of how well ported Android apps run on BlackBerry 10. Even now, the apps mostly run well and often times you can't even tell that they are Android aside from parts of the UI.
One catch you might find is that navigating them can be a bit troublesome at times if you don't know what you're doing. Prime example - I handed my BlackBerry Z10 off to my wife while it was in an Android application. Less than a minute later she was asking me "how do I go back?". If you're a bit stuck using Android apps on your BlackBerry 10 device, keep reading and we'll break it down for you.
Continue Reading →With the BlackBerry Z10 out there and becoming increasingly available, getting the word out about the device and the new BlackBerry 10 OS is pretty crucial for BlackBerry. We've seen an onslaught of TV ads including BlackBerrys first ever Super Bowl commercial, print ads, radio ads and now BlackBerry has employed the help of Blippar, an augmented reality mobile ad company, to help spread the word directly to Android and iOS users through an app.

You can now with the new easyjet application that arrived in BlackBerry World the other day. Free to download, the app allows users to not only browse and purchase tickets, but you can also make adjustments afterwards which may come in rather handy.

You've come to the right place. Here we'll lay out what you need to know before making the leap. BlackBerry 10 can give you nearly everything you already have on your Android phone so making the switch shouldn't be too hard. Keep reading to see how it all pans out.
Continue Reading →One personal gripe I've had with the Android runtime on BlackBerry 10 and the BlackBerry PlayBook is the fact that it's stull running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. While I understand why this was done, I was wondering if BlackBerry would ever be updating the runtime environment to support newer versions of Android.

It’s widely known that BlackBerry has offered the best in class handheld corporate security on their handheld devices, but today that is changing. At the BlackBerry Enterprise Forum for BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry introduced the workspace feature found on the Blackberry 10 platform for iOS and Android.

Continue Reading →We have already covered a few ways to sideload your favourite apps onto you BlackBerry PlayBook here on CrackBerry, both for Mac and PC but some people are not too comfortable with command prompts. That's where the PlayBook App Manager Browser Plugin comes in.
Developed by a member of our forums, CrackOp, PlayBook App Manager makes sideloading app onto your PlayBook as easy as dragging and dropping the .BAR file into a web interface. It's fast, it's easy, you'll be sideloading in no time.

Continue Reading →The BlackBerry Gods intervened this morning and have pretty much put an end to my visit with Android as part of the Mobile Nations World Tour (for the details of what happened, see this post). Long story short, I went for a jog this morning -- without the phone -- returned home, picked it up with sweaty / shaky hands and proceeded to drop it on the floor. I guess the Gorilla glass wasn't Gorilla enough for this fall. Lesson learned, yet again... if you want to protect your investment, use a case.
While a broken phone sucks, the timing on this isn't too bad at least. I'm going to switch back to my trusty white BlackBerry Bold 9900 for the next few weeks - I want to be representing properly at BlackBerry Jam Americas at at the end of the month. Then from there I'm going to give the iPhone 5 a try, then later in the fall with try out Windows Phone 8 on the Lumia 920. Then it will be on to glorious BlackBerry 10, which we're excited as all heck for! As for my final thoughts as a BlackBerry user gone Android for a stint, I'm going to work on my wrap up post this week, so stay tuned for that.
There's a ton of other stuff going on right now in the world of mobile, so keep reading for some quick thoughts on everything...

Football season is just a few short long weeks away, and fans everywhere are gearing up. One thing on my checklist is my fantasy football team -- I plan to stay on top of things this year and thankfully I can grab the Yahoo! Fantasy Football app for my BlackBerry PlayBook. To get the app installed you'll have to sideload it since it's not available directly in BlackBerry App World, but it's working like a champ for me thus far and is sure to be at my side all seaon long.
If you want to get Yahoo! or NFL Fantasy Football up and running on your BlackBerry PlayBook, just grab the .bar files here and here and keep reading for how to get it done!

Yes, I'm using an Android phone for the month of June as part of the Mobile Nations World Tour, so
don't act all surprised if you see me tweet from an Android client.
Happy Father's Day to all the CrackBerry dads out there!! I have to give a special shout out to my pops who I didn't get a chance to see today (I ran in a half marathon and couldn't make the trip out of the city). He reads CrackBerry daily though, so I know he'll see this. Thanks for being the bestest dad ever!
To all the fathers, I hope you've enjoyed your special day of honor and that your kids showed you some extra love. And if you received socks and ties today but next year are hoping for a little something something that caters to the techie in you, be sure to leave your web browser open to this page for your kids to stumble upon or accidentally forward them an email with the link. Father's Day Tech Gift guides only work when they're read by the kids ;)
Looking back at the week that was, it's been a busy one, so let's get to it!

Hair Strike! It's true, I'm growing out my hair until BlackBerry 10 is released. Hurry RIM!
So my plan was to write this post yesterday, but it turned out to be a Sunday of sports instead. I kicked off the morning with 13.5 mile jog (running the half in the Manitoba Marathon next Sunday), then took in the Italy - Spain matchup (EURO2012), then it was Formula 1 time with the Canadian Grand Prix, then the Ireland - Croatia match. After all the excitement the last thing I wanted to do was sit and type. So with my thumbs well rested, I'm pumping this one out on a Monday morning.... So Happy Monday morning y'all, let's get to it!
Continue Reading →It's on. I announced the Mobile Nations World Tour 2012 earlier this week, which has me spending the next few months getting to better know the competition as we wait for BlackBerry 10. My first stop on the tour is Android and yesterday I said hello to the audience over at our sibling site Android Central, who *mainly* welcomed me with open arms (turns out there are a lot of ex-BB users and CB fans over there too). I also joined Phil, Jerry and Alex for a podcast in the evening, which you can check about above.

Industry research firm Gartner just released its latest data on mobile phone sales for the first quarter of 2012. There are some interesting points to be pulled out of this report that I wanted to address. We have to work through a bit of data first, but we'll bring it back to BlackBerry very quick.
Samsung dominates Android. Gartner's data says that Korea-based Samsung shipped over 40% of all Android handsets last quarter. So that still leaves 60% of the market to other vendors, right? Yes, but according to Gartner none of these other vendors make up more than 10% of Android volume. None.
